Africa’s stars: The next generation

At Technica we love to play football with our children and pass the joy of the ball game on – and so do the superstars of course.
In our series of following in the footstep of the father as football stars, this time we look at the very best African players ever – and their sons.
Some names are not done at all being mentioned in connection with football, even though the fathers are now football pensioners.
This certainly applies to the surnames Drogba and Weah.
The attackers Didier Drogba and George Weah have been shining for many years as the probably greatest African superstars ever, but their teenage sons are now rushing into the scene and may be as good. Or even better?
The Drogba family
One of the best African strikers ever is Didier Drogba – and twice he was voted best of the continent. Drogba peaked in Chelsea with, among other things, a Champions League title, four English championships, and he twice the top scorer in the Premier League. The goal getter from the Ivory Coast by 2018 played in the second best US league, USL, for Phoenix Rising FC, where he became football’s first owner and player at the same time. As a 40-year-old, he has just stopped football and it was probably at the last minute before he was overtaken by his 17-year-old son, Isaac Drogba. The teenage talent Isaac is a striker (of course…) and came from Chelsea to French Guingamp; the same club where daddy’s career took off. Watch out for Drogba Junior!
Weah family
An even better African striker – and probably the continent’s best player ever – is George Weah.
He won – as the first African – the Ballon D’Or in 1995, and three times George Weah was named Africa’s Best.
Finally, he was named the Best African Player of the Century, and calling him superstar in his own country Liberia is a gigantic understatement.
In fact, he is so popular that he is now president of his country – and by the way, he is not completely done with football.
In September 2018, ‘old George’ played 79 minutes in a match against Nigeria.
It was pretty good by the 51-year-old to have air in his lungs that he, 16 years after his latest international match, just appeared for the national team one last time.
‘Old George’ could, in theory, have played an international match with his 18-year-old son, Timothy ‘Tim’ Weah.
The son is currently on loan from PSG to Celtic, and the 18-year-old striker (of course) is predicted to have a huge career as perhaps the greatest talent among all the sons of former top players right now.

The same day that George Weah played as 51-year-old for Liberia, Tim was on the US national team, which won 1-0 over Mexico.
It must be the first time ever that father and son have played internationally on the same day, but for each their country.
What if the game had been Liberia versus USA…
Abedi Pelé
One of the greatest African football players ever is Abedi Ayew – or Abedi Pelé, as his football name was named after the original Pelé from Brazil.
A wonderful offensive player who led Ghana, won the title of Africa’s best three times in 1991, 92 and 93 – and at club level, Abedi won the Champions League with Marseille.
All three of his sons went into his footballing footsteps, but without being able to fill them in completely.
However, both Ibrahim, André and Jordan were good enough to play for Ghana at the 2010 and 2014 World Cup.
