From fan to World Cup star

Back to news

When England beat Tunisia in their first World Cup match, defender Harry Maguire was the first to race out to the fans and thank for their support.
No wonder, just two years earlier, Harry Maguire was sitting in the midst of them.
In 2016 he was at the Euros as a fan.
In 2018 he is at the World Cup – as an English star.
There are festive photos of Harry Maguire from the EM in 2016 in France – as a fan in the stand with an England flag on his shoulders and a plastic jug with flat draft beer in his hands.
At that time, the slightly overlooked center defender played for Hull City and spent a couple of days off from the training to bring a bunch of comrades to France and sing songs about Harry Kane & Co.
Now he is playing with them, and in his first World Cup he won 100% of his tackles, won in seven air duels, created three chances, and in the overtime he assisted Harry Kane’s match winning goal.
So now, the English fans could pay homage to him – including Harry’s family and the friends he had been sitting together with two years earlier.
‘I’m still a fan of the English national team. If I had not been taken, I would again sit in the stand as a fan. My friends think it’s surreal that I’m down on the pitch now and not with them, and I really think so too, ‘admits Harry Maguire to the Daily Mirror.
Harry Maguire is huge, but was not a huge talent through the youth ranks.
He broke through late into football – and now he as 25 years old is the new man in the English national team.
He has moved from fan to World Cup star.
This is as fast as it can go if you can work hard and never stop believing that you can make it.
