The football angel – the forgotten legend

Back to news

Hendels Corner – by Lars Hendel, Technica.
Former football journalist at BT and Berlingske, has written about the football world from stadiums in the Super Liga to the World Cup finals.
Football expert and debater on TV3, and now media advisor for football players at international level in clubs like Barcelona and Seville.

Do you know who the first Dane in Real Madrid was?
Who won two German, two Spanish and a Dutch championship in the 1970s?
Who switched directly from Nørresundby in the Danmarksserie to world-star status at the Bundesliga championship team?
Gave debut in the Danish national team without having played a single division match?
Perhaps you know that it’s Henning Jensen, and in that case you probably know that the media just told about him due to his cancer-death at the age of 68.
Because death has made the forgotten legend alive again.
Many remember Michael Laudrups magic touch and know that Allan Simonsen is the only Dane who has ever won Ballon d’Or.
But Henning Jensen was the same wild world class for the 9 years he played in Borussia Mönchengladbach, Real Madrid and Ajax Amsterdam – three of the club’s strongest clubs at that time.
When Henning Jensen is not remembered and shouted in the same way, it is obviously due to time, but also his North Jutland way, his modesty and self-destructive explanation that when he scored a fantastic goal for Real Madrid, won a championship or hammered in two goals in his debut for the German champions, he was ‘lucky’.
As a football journalist, I have spoken to him several times – with respect and awe for one of my great heroes of childhood, and with a little annoyance that he was almost ‘too nice’, too diplomatic, too silent.
Because of his career, his style was far from quiet, but sparkling and spectacular, and his level high as one of Denmark’s biggest footballing talents ever.
The man with the beautiful goals and the the hovering style.
Reminded of how weightlessly wonderful football can be, preserved in the image from the 1973 European Community game at Wembley. Like then – now: The football angel Henning Jensen is dead, but the legend lives.
Rest in peace Henning Jensen.
