The man who invented the scissors kick

Have you tried the perfect scissors kick ? It feels pretty nice: You’re left hanging in the air, catching the ball in the air over your head – and before you touch earth again the ball is stroke in the net.
The first football player who felt the perfect scissors kick is the Brazilian Leonidas. It is at any rate him you’re calling ‘the scissors kick’s inventor’.
He became very popular in Brazil in the 1930s with more than 500 goals in his carrier and among other things 153 goals in 149 matches for the giant club Flamengo, which is one of the most popular clubs in the world with more than 40 million registered fans.
Leonidas should show the world how good he was at the World Championships, but the Brazilian national team traveled with a ship from South America to the finals in Italy, and the long trip over the Atlantic resulted in the fact that many of the players were sick of both the waves and bad food. And they couldn’t train in the many days at sea – so Brazil flopped foul.
At the next World Championship in 1938 did Leonidas take his revenge and was top scorer with seven goals and chosen as the finals’ best player too.
At the World Championships did he also show his scissors kick, and it shocked the referee to see the Brazilian hanging in the air – so he stopped the match, because he didn’t know, if this detail was legal at all.
Leonidas was called ‘The Black Diamond’, because he was one of the first black players, who was world known, and even though he’s dead long ago, there’s a dark chocolate in Brazil named after ‘The scissors kick’s inventor’; ‘The Diamond Negra’.
