The super talent that has disappeared

Who is Freddy Adu? It’s okay if you’re football freak but still do not fully recognize the name, because Freddy Adu is an American player who was predicted a career as a world star but ended … yes where? Because the next question is: Where is Freddy Adu? When you google the 28-year-old player, you can read that he 1) has stopped or 2) right now is playing for the Tampa Bay Rowdies, FK Jagodina in Serbia, Las Vegas Lights FC or the Swedish 3rd division club Oskarshamns AIK … or 3) is without a club. The point in the mystery is that Freddy Adu ought to be at the pinnacle of his career, but instead has disappeared from the football scene, where he as a teenager bathed in the spotlight and world fame. I would have taken a great fortune teller to predict this lost career in the coffee grounds when Freddy Adu, aged 14, became the youngest American player ever to sign a professional contract and to both play and score goals in the MLS league with the adults and at the same age become the super talent, the big name for the United States with the somewhat older boys at the U17 World Cup. Big clubs raised their eyebrows, the teenager was dubbed ‘The New Pelé’, and Nike signed a huge deal with Freddy, which secured him millions and worldwide fame. But this also made him believe that he was now the world star he never just became. Freddy Adu is the story of never having to stop working hard to develop in football and saying, ‘Now I’ve done it – now I’ve broken through, now I’m on top and I’m automatically bound to stay on top. Standing still is like taking a step back – and if you step backwards in the world top football, you’ll be done soon enough. If, instead, Freddy Adu had been thinking of doing his best for every training session and having fun with football, he might have lived up to his talent and played in one of the clubs that believed in him along the way, such as AS Monaco or Manchester United.
