In dad’s footsteps – and granddad’s

Back to news

In Technica, in a series of stories from the wonderful world of football, we have looked at fathers and sons whom both have played football at top level. Actually, there are also some families where even three generations have reached the tops.
Many Spaniards, smiling and laughing, probably remember the match in March 2018, where Spain crushed Argentina 6-1, but for one single family, the day was quite historic.
When Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso came on for his debut for Spain, he followed in the footsteps of both his father and his grandfather.
As a result, the Alonso family became the seventh family in the world, with three generations playing national team football.
Here are the other 3rd generation national team players: Diego Forlan (Uruguay), Javier Hernandez (Mexico), Warren Feeney (Northern Ireland), Hazem Emam (Egypt), Vladimir Weiss (Slovakia) and Andre Schembri (Malta).
Especially Vladimir Weiss is worth mentioning – and I you say that name once, you have mentioned all three of them: Grandfather, father and son all have the same name.
Central American football superpower Mexico has had West Ham striker Javier Hernandez participating in three World Cup final tournaments. ‘Chicharito’ – the Little Pea, which Javier Hernandez is affectionately called – has done well, because he has scored in all three of them, and thus he has surpassed his father and grandfather, who have both been at the World Cup.
Who becomes the next family of three generations in the national team?
It might be the Maldini family, where Grandpa Cesare has been both national team player and coach, while Paolo was a definite legend for Italy and AC Milan.
Older brother Christian probably won’t have a big breakthrough, while little brother Daniel Maldini is a talented teenage striker in AC Milan’s youth setup and has previously appeared for the youth teams of squadra azzurra.
Another good guess could be Sveinn Aron Gudjohnsen, Icelandic U21 national team player.
Grandfather Arnor Gudjohnsen had a great career with other Anderlecht and Bordeaux, but was succeeded by his son Eidur as international top player in Barcelona, among others.
They were writing history when Eidur in 1996 as a 17-year-old replaced 34-year-old Arnor in the 3-0 win over Estonia: Out with Father – in with Son…
Eidur’s three sons have all played in Barca’s youth setup, but both Andri Lucas and Daniel switched to Real Madrid, while Sveinn Aron is owned by Italian Serie B club Spezia.

The Danish Laudrup dynasty just missed out, because although Andreas and Mads Laudrup were playing professional football and youth national matches for Denmark, neither one was given national team debuts as father Michael and grandfather Finn.
